Gina Hinojosa: State income tax

Gina Hinojosa (D) · Democratic nominee for Governor of Texas (Nov. 3, 2026 ballot)

Topic: State income tax

THEN · 2016-02-24

“We rely so heavily in the state on property taxes, too heavily, in my opinion, because we don't have the third leg of that stool that's required to have a robust and strong and resilient economy, which would include income taxes.”

NOW · 2026-10-08

“Texans work hard for what they earn. That’s why our constitution bans an income tax. And that’s why I oppose one.”

Context: The 2016 remark came in a KXAN interview when she was a candidate for the Texas House. In 2019 Texas voters approved Proposition 4, adding a state income tax ban to the Texas Constitution. Asked about this in Sept. 2026, she told CBS News Texas, "I am not for a state income tax."
